Seal launching off Red Rock during Storm Gathering
October 2009 - Tim is captured here Seal Launching in his kayak off Red Rock Lighthouse (near Snug Harbour, Georgian Bay) Part of the many activities during this years Fall Sea Kayak Storm Gathering which didn't see any waves or wind - Georgian Bay was flat as a Pancake but everyone had fun just the same. Thanks to Rick Wise of Horizons for suppyling this video footage.
Click here to view and listen to a podcast from the east coast called "Doing Stuff Outdoors" by Gary Mittelholtz, a former CBC journalist who interviewed Tim and Kathy last summer.
"Our feature interview on the show is with Tim and Kathy Dyer of ‘White Squall’, a paddling centre and outdoor gear store near Parry Sound, Ontario. Their paddling shop has been called the 4th best in the world by National Geographic Adventure magazine. Gary spoke with Tim a couple of years ago when ‘White Squall’ was highly rated in our ‘Where To Get Stuff’ segment. This past summer, Gary visited the paddling centre and sat down with Tim and Kathy. They spoke about their love of the outdoors and how they moved from a nordic ski facility to a kayaking centre. They talk about what makes them unique, their respect for the environment and the beauty of paddling on Georgian Bay."
Thanksgiving & Fall Happenings
Winding down for the season - One of our staff Katie is leaving today - Yup, she's off to Kiwi land for the winter (& Jesse won't be far behind ... ) Bonne Voyage and good luck to both of them.
Fall Happenings The Art trip went really well for Siobhan and Jack - Greg Mason's dad sailed his boat up to join the group and they had amazing weather. Same thing for September Moments - Patti, Peter and Cathy had a full house (9 participants) with great weather - one daytrip was 30 km - and this with a group where most were in there 60's and 70's! Several jumped in for a swim every morning - guess us guide types are gittin soft cause far as I know, staff weren't part of the swimming crowd.
Storm Gathering is almost full however there are a few spots left. We are really looking forward to Saturday night fish supper at Gilly's, Mark Scriver's Presentation on paddling Greenland and Kenton Otterbeins talk and show on the Bay history.
Lots of School Kayak Programmes - We had Rosseau College out for three trip sections mid September then the last week of Sept was a trip section from Bruce Peninsula Highschool with Kevin and Christine. Jessie and I went out on last week with Parry Sound High School Outtrip - so there we were - about 36 kayaks (between all different trip groups) on the Bay in the wildest weather we've had all year. Funny how the most exciting stuff happens in the fall.

Storm Gathering Only Two Weeks Away!
Early bird special (ends Oct. 1)but now has been extended to Oct 7th!!! Yeehah!! for the Snug Harbour Storm Gathering at Snug Haven Resort Oct. 15-18 (georgianbaystormgathering.com). A most awesome and skookum ending to the paddling season on Georgian Bay.
Kayaker Playing in Shoals off Geogian Bay coast near Snug Harbour - photo Charlotte Jacklein
Co-sponsored by paddlinginstructor.com & White Squall, sea kayakers from all over Ontario are coming for a smorgasbord of events led by Ontario's wildest and craziest instructors. Highlights include :
a presentation on Scoresbysund and Greenland paddling by Mark Scriver - one of Canada's top sea explorers.
Gilly's of Snug Harbour is putting on a Georgian Bay pickerel shore supper Saturday night (included with registration)
Kenton Otterbein - chief naturalist with Killbear Prov. Park signing on Friday night with a totally awesome presentation called "From White Pines to White Squalls" The 30,000 islands may seem idyllic now, but they've seen their share of war, political intrigue, financial empire building, shipwrecks, disasters and ecological change over the last 200 years - Kenton is a storyteller at heart with wonderful images, tales and photos to share of the Georgian Bay Coast.
"Wild Weather with Guido and Luigi" a lighthearted dog and pony show about coffee cups, whipped cream, rope, storms and lightning.
Right now we only got a few spots left. We've got daily rates - tenting is available and cozy cabins - there's something for everyone. David Johnston and I are crossing our paddles to fill 'er up right quick (hence the special deal) so we can go to bed and dream about paddling, hottubs, Greenland and fresh fish rather than silly things like convincing participants.
Every year in the fall Naturally Superior Adventures hosts their annual Surf Superior Confluence at the mouth of the Michipicoten River on Lake Superior. Some years have wilder surf than others but it is always a fun time. Based on the craziness of the weather this year, you should be in for some gnarly surf by October.
The dates are Friday, October 2 to Sunday the 4th and costs only $140 which covers all of your meals, camping and a Saturday night concert. You can book a room in the lodge for $88/night if you desire a comfy bed at the end of the day.
Tell 10 friends about this event and you'll catch the best surf you've ever had (or some other wacky prediction).
Hope to see you on Superior.
Warm Regards Megan Romano
Island Art Retreat Kayak Trip on Georgian Bay
Come learn to sketch and paint under the guidance of artist Sharon MacKinnon on this 4 day island kayak adventure on Georgian Bay. Sharon is an artist, teacher and outdoor adventurer whose goal is to kayak all the world’s oceans. Amazingly, only the Antarctic remains. Sharon has kayaked Greenland and Canada’s Baffin Bay, rafted in Costa Rica, hiked New Zealand, skied the Rockies, biked in Thailand, and raced a Masters World Cup. Her sketch book and paints always travel with her!
When she’s not pursuing her latest adventure, she'll be leading the Island Art Retreat September 1 - 4, a lodge-based kayaking trip on spectacular Georgian Bay out of Diamond Key Lodge. This four-day soft-adventure expedition features home-cooked meals and accommodation in a traditional Georgian Bay island fishing camp with daily paddling trips out to the islands where participants learn to sketch and paint under the guidance of this talented artist.
