Hi  Fun Seekers – it’s your hoot and blat guy from  White Squall checking in on a sunny winter’s day.  It’s so warm...Benji is lying outside on the snow snoring away while a chickadee dances over his big fat belly.  Our visitor services specialist is clearly on winter down time.

Wilderness First Aid Courses

We have three different courses offered in April being taught by Wilderness Medical Associates (WMA)   The curriculum is activity based and internationally recognized by the Wilderness Medical Society.  Anyone out there planning to spend time outdoors would be well served by taking one of these courses..

  • The two day Wilderness First Aid (WFA) is  a great start and offers skill training way beyond a Standard First Aid course.  It teaches you to respond effectively in a near wilderness situation.  I’ve  taken a ton of these and have never been bored – they are really fun.
  • You can ramp it up a bit and take the 4 day Wilderness Advanced First Aid (WAFA) which teaches a bit more theory and then takes the learning into more involved scenarios – which is where you really learn this stuff.
  • Finally, we have a Bridge course to Wilderness First Responder (WFR) This is for the keeners who want to learn skills for deep wilderness first aid.

Oh yes, and my yearly rant – for the youth of this fine world, having one of these courses under your belt goes a heck of a long way on any resume – no matter what you want to pursue.   So with WMA at WS recognized by WMS teaching WFA, AWFA & WFR you should sign up PDQ or we’ll run out of acronyms.

Paddle Canada Courses

Kaitlin - guide and instructor in a kayak on Georgian Bay, Ontario

Clinics, Daytrips and Bay Adventures

These are starting to fill (looks like this recession is taking us back to the near wilderness waters and our non-motorized roots)  There’s still room and we would love for you to join us.  Have a look at kayak programmes page for a complete listing. ( http://www.whitesquall.com/programmes.html)

Paddle Party and Open House – Long Weekend in May (16,17) (formerly our festival/symposium)

Kaitlin - guide and instructor in a kayak on Georgian Bay, Ontario

Two days of goofing around on our lake with tons of mini paddling clinics and talks  on everything to do with kayaking and canoeing. There are guest instructors and speakers from all over Ontario coming to help out and it’s ALL FREE We’ll have kids activities on and off the water so come whenever you want.  Bring a picnic and enjoy organic coffee and conversation ( i’m not sure what organic conversation is but it will be organic ?!).  Saturday pm is the almost-famous Cardboard Kayak Race and on Sunday pm, we’re gonna have the first annual Cole Lake Boat Parade where all the orphans of White Squall and any other wayward craft get to go out on the water with humans in one totally awesome and excellent flotilla..  Everyone can take part – bring a pfd if you  have one.  Be a part of the biggest boat parade this side of Ardbeg.  For more details, see Paddle Party & Open House
