Bay, Bush & Kite Skiing - Feb. 09

The Bay and the Bush are some of the best places to ski right now. Get on the Bay or in the bush-late winter crust is at it’s finest this time of year for skiing and snowshoeing. You have to get out early before the sun softens things up – but it’s worth it.
If you like something a bit more exciting try kite skiing. I've been using the Bay for kite skiing in Feb. and March for about 4 years now. The best part of kiting is that you can get the thrill of downhill skiing without the drive to the hill, save a bundle on lift tickets, not have to wait in line for the lifts or the cafeteria and chances are you won't collide with another skier (maybe an ice hut or two but can see them coming a long way off).

You can kite ski under most solid ice conditions when there is wind :hard ice, soft or hard packed snow and even a bit slushy snow at times as long as there is enough wind to pull you along. When its hard and icy , you only need light winds and sharp edges to have some fun. In softer snow it's a dreamy feeling floating along on top of the snow - a bit like powder skiing in the mountains. But alas there are no mountains on the Georgian Bay coast (well 1 billiion years ago there were but that's another story) so kite skiing is the next best thing for us downhill skiers in Parry Sound area.
