Hoot and Blat for mid May
Lots of new gear and boats arriving and terrific things happening……..
Valley Kayaks Fresh off the boat from England, a dozen came to live with us – all of them seem quite smart – and quick to learn. I took the poly Nordkapp out a couple of nights ago in 30 knot winds, and I think it taught me a thing or two…..it’s fast, surfs great – and takes a bit of energy to move around – ol tim needs to pump some iron…..
Nano Surf Technology No, it isn’t merchandising from the Mork and Mindy Show – just some very high tech stuff to put on the bottom of your boat to go like Jack the Bear. For about $35. You really can go faster than your friends (everything else being equal of course!)
Commander -view website The latest and greatest stand up sit on top for fishing – all the bells and whistles to catch that mighty lake trout of your dreams. Check out our other SOT designs in stock and ready to go.
Bark -website Ok, Mark Scriver told me this is the bestest stand up board ever….and I think he’s not too far off. You can carve, trip, paddle up wind and go like stink – the sports car from Surftec – and there I thought the Laird boards were way cool. Well – they still are, the Bark is just cooler.
Maelstrom These boats are getting rave reviews – extremely strong – Canadian made and very good looking –kind of like me, except I was born in the south of England and my deck rigging is a bit frayed.
On the Loose Renny Russell is a powerful writer – he and his brother Terry wrote this book in the late 60’s, and it became the best seller the Sierra Club has ever produced. There’s far more to the story, but suffice to say it has been with Kathy and I all through our outdoor lives – and we continue to go back to it. Renny has also written “Rock Me On the Water” and both books are hard to find. I was lucky to find Renny in New Mexico via the internet, and he’s sent us copies to sell of both – I hope you’ll be able to see what I mean - they’re incredible.
Solo Canoe I don’t know why we don’t have more of these, but anyway – we just got a beauty on trade from Wenonah – light – even though it’s made of Royalex – and we’re going to rent it and use it this summer, so if you need one for a lone fire trip – give us a call.
Rob Roy Nova Craft has taken this acclaimed and historic design, and made it into a lightweight winner – even Jesse, who is a fusspot with boats – took it out and allowed that it was a fun boat to paddle.
New Youth Trip Added Our Youth Adventure trip is full, so we’ve added another on July 20-23. Hope you can join in!
SODS Squallions Out Digging is a Squall Project for the outer islands west of Parry Sound. We’re visiting them about a dozen times this season to check on campsites, relocate outhouses and spread the word that we’re all paddling in a little piece of paradise. It’s a costly thing, and we’re really pleased to have the support of the Georgian Bay Land Trust, the East Georgian Bay Stewardship Council and the Great Lakes Sea Kayak Association. These groups have offered help in some way, and it really encourages us to keep going. If you are interested in helping with a donation, please let me know.
Paddle Party on the Long Weekend I’ve attached a draft schedule just to give you an idea – it might change a bit. Fred Eaglesmith is coming Sat night and stunning opening acts will warm you up. There are still about 50 tickets left – so call 705-342-5324 if you want in. The rest of the weekend is free – it’s all one big party to celebrate being on the planet – still paddling and feeding blackflies – what else is there in life? If you are coming - please CARPOOL and leave your pets at home – Carling Bay Road is busy, so pay attention to the parking folks and watch when you open your car door! |
