Tim's Tips for Blackfly Season
staff_timTim’s Tip #1
This comes from Mustang Survival in BC - “for mouldy PFD’s, try soaking the jacket in a solution of 500ml per four litres of salt for several hours, scrubbing affected areas and then hanging to dry, Wash again with soap and water.” To avoid this in the first place - spray the jacket with 303 a few times each summer - it really works and I use it on drysuit gaskets, and fiberglass and poly hulls as a polish and UV protector. Really cool stuff.

Tip #2
When doing a sweep stroke with your canoe or kayak paddle - experiment with keeping a strong hull edge by recovering the stroke across the water using the backside. You can lean out on that backsweep (don’t put any climbing angle on it, just skip it across the water)
and you’ll dazzle your friends.

Tip #3
Don’t listen to anyone who tells you that the only boat for you is one with a rudder.... or a skeg....or hard chines....or soft chines....or.....a long one.....or short one....or ???? Truth is it all depends. You need to find a boat that fits and is comfortable - and does what you want it to. That takes a bit of time and patience, but it’s all worth it. Kayaks and canoes are a really inexpensive, healthy way to get outdoors - the original two strokes!
